Skin cancer expert Dr Sally Shaw said it’s important to be prepared before you go into your skin cancer check to achieve the best possible outcome.

There are a few important things to do before you arrive for your skin check that will ensure the best chance for the early detection of skin cancer, especially melanoma.

Skin cancer expert, Dr Sally Shaw, said it’s important to be prepared before you go into your skin cancer check to achieve the best possible outcome.

“We know that most melanomas, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, appear as a new mole, so any information on new or changing moles may be life saving,” said Dr Shaw.

“Early melanoma may not display any of the features usually seen in more advanced cases such as asymmetry, irregular borders or multiple colours. Sometimes the only clue is that they are a new or changing mole or lesion,” she said.

“A small number of melanomas appear in hidden areas too, so it’s a good idea to check your privates before your appointment so you can get the doctor to check them if necessary.”

Dr Shaw’s list of things to do before your skin check:

  • Write down your concerns so you don’t forget to mention them
  • List your allergies, pre-existing conditions and medications
  • Remove nail polish from fingernails and toenails
  • Remove makeup and bulky jewellery for a clear view of your skin
  • Make sure your hair is clean and knot free for a thorough scalp check
  • Check your breasts and genitals before the appointment
  • Wear some underpants as you will be asked to remove your outer clothes

Dr Shaw said the final item to bring along to your appointment is your diary. “The last thing you’d want to do is have some skin cancer treatment on your face the week before a special occasion,” she said. “No one wants family photos with bandages.”
