California Wildfires Destroy Hundreds of Homes and Damage Many More

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

The Valley Fire, which broke out last weekend north of San Francisco, has reportedly already caused one fatality and massive property destruction.  Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in both Napa and Lake Counties and has requested funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to battle the fast-moving fire.

According to media reports as of Tuesday, the fire had burned over 62,000 acres and destroyed numerous businesses, apartment complexes and close to 600 homes.  Many more properties are threatened and even those that were not burnt to the ground, including many that are miles from the flames, have now been infiltrated with thick wildfire smoke.

Wildfire smoke is comprised of combustion by-products that include soot, ash and char. Not only can it leave behind unpleasant odors and residues, it can also cause corrosion, etching and discoloration on any surface in the property.

“2015 has already brought historic fires, property destruction and smoke damage to many parts of California,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “Those with homes and businesses lucky enough to have escaped direct flame damage should be on the lookout for signs of smoke damage when they are allowed to return to their homes and businesses.  Many insurance policies will cover this type of damage, but it is often left to the property owner to provide proof of damages.  LA Testing offers sampling supplies, analytical services and easy-to-use test kits to identify smoke residues to help with this process.”

LA Testing also recently produced an educational video about smoke damage that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Owo8lIoVTuk.
