Education needs to be opened up to people everywhere, and not just those living close enough to a training or education establishment...

There will be a shortage of 12.9 million healthcare workers by 2035, according to a report released by the World Health Organization (WHO), entitled ‘A Universal Truth: No Health Without a Workforce’. With the Baby Boomer generation now aging, the demand for doctors is steadily on the rise, and fast becoming a national problem.

Currently, the healthcare professional shortage comes in at 7.2 million, and the report warns that if the existing issue is left unresolved, the situation will dramatically impact the health of billions of people worldwide in the future.

WHO found a number of key causes adding to the looming crisis, including an aging healthcare workforce, with staff leaving for better paying jobs and staff retiring without any replacements. Staff retirement also coincided with very few young people entering the healthcare industry, and many of those entering came without adequate training. Add to this the increased risks of non-communicable diseases in a growing world population, such as cancer, heart disease and stroke.

With the huge medical demands placed on the healthcare system by the baby boomer generation now and going into the future, SIMTICS CEO Cherry Vanderbeke believes healthcare and medical eLearning is the obvious way forward, to support current school curriculums with education technology that will encourage rural and regional students to enrol. “As the baby boomer generation moves through the years into their 60s and 70s, their health and fitness is naturally declining as they age, but they want to stay well and active for far longer than their parents and grandparents. Those higher expectations of healthcare are creating a shortage of health workers that has to be rectified,” Cherry says. www.simtics.com

“Education needs to be opened up to people everywhere, and not just those living close enough to a training or education establishment, in order to achieve the numbers of professionals needed in the medical and healthcare sector.”

SIMTICS provides healthcare eLearning opportunities for students that allow them to learn clinical procedures cognitively through online simulations, to complement and strengthen their current school curriculum. SIMTICS founder, Professor John Windsor, knew from first-hand experience that there was a need for cost-effective education solutions that could be accessed from even the most remote locations. He pioneered the concept of online cognitive simulation with the vision of helping people learn and practice clinical procedures safely - anytime and anywhere - in an affordable and sustainable way. www.simtics.com

Cherry says, “Professor Windsor knew that online tools could extend the reach of schools to remote locations. That means that more people can be trained while ensuring that students are achieving good competence levels, and ultimately reduce the high demand for doctors.

“When people talk about eLearning or online learning, they’re generally referring to a PowerPoint presentation, a video or a digital textbook, but none of these things give people competence. They’re all didactic resources, and they don’t test levels of competency; they only provide the theory. With our realistic simulations, we’re helping to bridge the gap between didactic knowledge and hands-on practical skills.”
