There will be a shortage of 12.9 million healthcare workers by 2035, according to a report released by the World Health Organization (WHO), entitled ‘A Universal Truth: No Health Without a Workforce’. With the Baby Boomer generation now aging, the demand for doctors is steadily on the rise, and fast becoming a national problem.

Currently, the healthcare professional shortage comes in at 7.2 million, and the report warns that if the existing issue is left unresolved, the situation will dramatically impact the health of billions of people worldwide in the future.

WHO found a number of key causes adding to the looming crisis, including an aging healthcare workforce, with staff leaving for better paying jobs and staff retiring without any replacements. Staff retirement also coincided with very few young people entering the healthcare industry, and many of those entering came without adequate training. Add to this the increased risks of non-communicable diseases in a growing world population, such as cancer, heart disease and stroke.
