Poor indoor air quality is not just a comfort issue as exposure to elevated levels of particulates, chemicals and biological contaminants can lead to health concerns that can negatively impact a student’s ability to learn.

Many schools across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean open their doors in August to start the new school year.  In Puerto Rico alone, there are over 1,400 public schools and more than 700 private schools for the approximately 600,000 K-12 students.

There are many indoor factors that can help improve the learning environment for these students.  One of the main issues is healthy indoor air quality (IAQ).  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Evidence from schools and office building studies demonstrate that various environmental conditions are closely associated with the incidence of measurable adverse health effects, and that indoor air quality problems can result in increased absences because of respiratory infections, allergic diseases from biological contaminants, or adverse reactions to chemicals used in the building.”

In today’s economic climate, many schools in Puerto Rico have had their maintenance and operating budgets reduced.  This can contribute to IAQ problems due to lack of preventive maintenance, ventilation issues and the postponement of facility improvement projects.

Helping schools identify and resolve indoor air quality problems to provide a healthy and productive environment for students and faculty is Zimmetry Environmental.  “Poor indoor air quality is not just a comfort issue as exposure to elevated levels of particulates, chemicals and biological contaminants can lead to health concerns that can negatively impact a student’s ability to learn,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “At Zimmetry, we are dedicated to identifying IAQ problems and coming up with solutions so that our children and teachers can concentrate on learning in a healthy environment.”

The building science professionals at Zimmetry provide IAQ testing and consulting services for schools, commercial buildings and residential properties across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.  They have also sponsored an online video about IAQ issues in schools that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/8ktQGXR5xPA
