Presidential Candidate Michelet Nestor to Address Mass Deportations from Haiti - Dominican Republic Border

Mutual Political Failure to Resolve Regularization Issue Threatens to Destabilize Fragile Haitian Recovery Efforts

Port au Prince, Haiti – WEBWIRE

As thousands may be forced on to our land against their will and ours, we can no longer stand idly by and watch a lapse in bureaucratic judgement create a man-made disaster of unprecedented proportions. These en masse deportations will again devastate our nation, its economy and now, its vital relationship with the neighboring Dominican Republic.

WHERE: Neutral Border Territory between Haiti and the Dominican Republic

WHEN: Friday, July 10th at 10:00 am EST

DESCRIPTION: Thousands of Haitian nationals have for decades fled to the Dominican Republic due to a lack of employment opportunity, proper agriculture cultivation, education and basic healthcare in the Republic of Haiti. Subsequently, hundreds of thousands of individuals of Haitian descent, many having never visited their neighbor and would-be ’homeland’, now reside and are an intregral component of the Dominican Republic and its social fabric.

The mass deportations being enforced by Dominican Republic President Medina and Immigration Minister Sem are fundamental violations of human rights. This should be a critical opportunity in Haitian history to advocate for those descendants that are proud of their heritage and press for blanket amnesty and a smooth regularization transitional period for citizens that are vitial to both nations’ socioeconomy.

Discussing the multifaceted challenges posed to Haiti should the deportations be executed, Monsieur Michelet Nestor, candidate in the October 25th Presidential elections, will speak briefly on the “man-made disaster” created by the Martelly and Medina Administrations, one that threatens to be the economic equivalent of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that forever altered Haiti and its way of life.
