With more widespread backing from medical and scientific institutions, and the release of conclusive and widely respected research, Australians are feeling more confident about the meditation process and the opportunities a stillness of the mind can create in a person’s life through relaxation and clarity.

Yearning to achieve a stillness of the mind through meditation has formed a part of human history for more than 6,000 years, evidenced through ancient scriptures and drawings. But while the practice has been around for centuries, the western world has remained wary of the claimed benefits, and slow to adopt such mind-body techniques into its culture.

Medical research across the globe over the past 40 years has continued to consistently establish the health and wellness advantages of mind-body practices such as meditation, imagery and contemplation. According to these studies, regular meditation reduces incidences of disease and illness, accelerates healing, and also leads to better performance at work, in education, sports and relationships.

Indian-born Saurabh Mishra, founder and managing director of Imageryworks – a company committed to bringing practical solutions for experiencing, learning and sustaining mindfulness and meditation, says that while meditation is still a relatively new concept to the Australian masses, it’s encouraging to see that “more people are recognising its health and wellness benefits and adopting simple meditation techniques into their homes”. www.mindbodymastery.net

“With more widespread backing from medical and scientific institutions, and the release of conclusive and widely respected research, Australians are feeling more confident about the meditation process and the opportunities a stillness of the mind can create in a person’s life through relaxation and clarity,” says Saurabh.

But in Australia there still seems to be a lot of confusion between the terms relaxation, mindfulness and meditation. Saurabh explains: “Relaxation and mindfulness are both precursors to meditation practice. So when we sit to meditate, the first thing we do is actively relax the body and mind. There are many simple meditation techniques to do this and one of the most effective is progressive muscle relaxation – tensing and relaxing each muscle in turn – to invariably calm the mind”.

“The next step is to be mindful, first of any sounds we can hear around us, then of any sensations we can feel in the body, then drawing the awareness inwards and being mindful of our breath, then of our thoughts, and finally the stillness that is behind the flow of thoughts,” Saurabh says. “Mindfulness is about deliberately breaking the link between observing and judging. People simply observe these things without labelling them as good or bad”.

Saurabh continues, “And strictly speaking meditation really only starts when we find that point of stillness within. To remain fixed in that stillness despite any sounds, sensations and thoughts – that is the practice of meditation.” www.mindbodymastery.net

To show Australians how to meditate properly and effectively, Saurabh Mishra together with Dr. Ian Gawler, developed the Mindbody Mastery Program. The program is easy to follow with valuable and simple meditation techniques to learn. It’s easy to access online and, to help keep everyone on the right path to regular practice, the founders offer ongoing support.

“We believe that the quality of people’s lives largely depends on the quality of their minds and meditation is the key to unlocking the mind’s potential. We receive great feedback about the Mindbody Mastery Program. We are about to launch the program as a smartphone App with world-first features to encourage regular practice, which will arguably make it the best meditation app currently on the market,” says Saurabh. “At the end of the day though, what’s important to us is that people are living better and healthier lives.”
