Mold Shuts Down Apartment Complex in Santa Rosa

Last month, The Press Democrat reported that city code enforcement officers from Santa Rosa, California ordered all residents of an apartment complex to vacate the property.  According to the article, this all occurred after high levels of mold were found in the air.  In addition to the mold problems, there were also reports of leaking roofs, plumbing and windows; unsafe conditions; rat infestations; and problems with the heating system.
 
All of these conditions can lead to problems with indoor air quality.  If the plumbing and the exterior of the building has leaks, mold can begin to grow in under 48 hours.  Elevated humidity levels can also allow dust mites to flourish.  The presence of any of these can lead to allergies and trigger asthma in some people.  In addition, mold can cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, expose people to mycotoxins and cause infections in people with a weakened immune system.
