Santa Clarita Valley Homes Flooded & Now Face Microbial Concerns

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Last month, The Santa Clarita Valley Signal published a report about property damage to homes after a water pipe burst allowing 1.3 million gallons of water to inundate some properties in the area.  According to the article, the impacted residents have been told it will likely be two to three months before they are able to return to their homes.

Not only did the sudden gush of water destroy furnishings, belongings and parts of the homes, but also impacted homeowners need to be aware of potential microbial issues if the properties are not thoroughly dried and properly remediated.  Standing water, wet materials and high humidity levels can be a breeding ground for microorganisms such as bacteria and mold. Many of these contaminants can become airborne during cleanup and rebuilding efforts or be left behind if damaged properties are not properly restored.

“Some materials that are wet and cannot be thoroughly cleaned and dried within 24-48 hours may need to be discarded,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “When flooding occurs, mold is often a major concern.  Not only can it cause musty odors, but exposure can trigger asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, allergies and infections in some people.  At LA Testing, we provide comprehensive testing services following any type of flood.  Services include testing for mold, bacteria, allergens and materials that are already in the home that could become airborne during remediation, such as lead and asbestos.  These services allow repair workers to take the proper safety precautions and they provide peace of mind for homeowners that their home is safe once post remediation testing is complete.”

LA Testing recently sponsored an online video about flood cleanup and indoor air quality issues that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q1tnHFkPF0.
