City puts the spotlight on Christmas!

Sydney – WEBWIRE

The City of Sydney’s festive season officially kicks off on Thursday 27 November with the annual Children’s Christmas Concert and Tree Lighting in Martin Place and Christmas on the Green in Hyde Park North.

People can head to Martin Place from 6pm–8.30pm and enjoy a night packed with free entertainment.

The City’s inaugural Christmas Ambassador, Channel 7 celebrity Melissa Doyle, will MC the concert that will feature a surprise headline act, characters from Sesame Street, Lah-Lah’s BIG Live Band, Eddie Perfect and carols from the Australian Girls’ Choir.

Santa and the Lord Mayor will arrive on a sleigh with the winner of the City’s annual children’s colouring in competition, who will light the City’s interactive Christmas Tree when the concert finishes. There will also be a spectacular fireworks display to welcome the festive season.

“Our Christmas Tree lighting is always an exciting way to start the Christmas season and we expect thousands of people to come to the city centre to celebrate,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“Our city is home to people of nearly 200 different nationalities and many different faiths, and the Christmas message of peace and goodwill is one that everyone can share.

“It’s also an important time of year for our local businesses and we’re proud to be supporting them by attracting people to the city.”

Standing 20 metres tall, the Martin Place Christmas Tree will be dressed with 60,000 lights, 120 interactive stars, 200 stainless steel baubles and a 1.5 metre star on top.

Christmas on the Green in Hyde Park will be a more relaxed atmosphere for families. From 6pm–8.30pm MC James Tobin will lead an evening of performances by Hi-5, Tom & Jerry, Butterscotch’s Playground, Emma Pask and St Andrew’s Cathedral Choir, with a fireworks display finale.

Over the coming weeks, there will be village concerts in Rushcutters Bay, Rosebery, Alexandria and Surry Hills, featuring live entertainment, carols, kids’ craft activities and a special visit from Santa.

As part of the Sydney Christmas program, Sydney Town Hall and Pitt Street Mall will be illuminated with projections and Pitt Street Mall will also be home to Australia’s first ever, LEGO® Christmas Tree at Westfield Sydney.

Hundreds of city retailers and village boutiques will be hosting special events and offering some great in-store promotions for the festive season. Shoppers will be entertained by choir performances in Pitt Street Mall every Thursday evening and, for the first time, carols by the Martin Place Tree every night in December.
