"Water" Rises in Anger in Thought Provoking Awareness Campaign from Conservation International

Academy Award® Winner Penélope Cruz Brings Precious Resource to Life in Nature Is Speaking

Arlington, Va. – WEBWIRE

Today, Conservation International (CI) spotlighted the sixth film in its provocative environmental awareness campaign called Nature Is Speaking.  Voiced by Actress Penélope Cruz, “Water” comes to life in dramatic fashion, asking humans if they are prepared to live in a world where there is not enough water to go around.

“Will they wage wars over me – like they do over everything else?  That’s always an option.  But it’s not the only option,” states Water.

“If we continue down the path we’re on, there simply won’t be enough fresh water for everyone.  I am proud to lend my voice to this film as a way to bring attention to this pressing issue,” said Cruz.  “Around the world millions of people are already living in a true water crisis.  We must act now to make sure fresh water is available to everyone, no matter where they live.  The consequences of doing nothing will be even more catastrophic.”

Nature Is Speaking is a series of short films voiced by some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Penélope Cruz, Harrison Ford, Edward Norton, Robert Redford, Julia Roberts, Ian Somerhalder and Kevin Spacey.  CI worked with the Audience Behavior Lab (ABL), a division of TBWA\Media Arts Lab, to create the film series under the creative direction of TBWA\MAL Chairman, Lee Clow.

Over 70% of our planet is covered with water, but only 1% of Earth’s water is fresh and available to use.  It’s essential for drinking, growing crops, sanitation and energy production. Without it communities will crumble.

Did You Know?

  • By 2050, our demand for water will outstrip its reliable supply by 40%
  • Diseases from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war
  • Nearly every major river in the world has been dammed, and more than 70% of available surface water is used for agriculture purposes alone

CI is working to transform the way the world manages water.  CI’s scientists are conducting research and focusing efforts on protecting water, working in areas like Bogota, Colombia, to create innovative solutions and models for conservation that could be used anywhere in the world.

Viewers can join the discussion by using #NatureIsSpeaking and the Twitter handle, @Water_CI.  HP will give $1 to CI (up to $1 million) to support its international conservation work, for every use of the hashtag, #NatureIsSpeaking, on Twitter, Faceboook, Instagram, G+, Vine, LinkedIn, YouTube or Tumblr.
