Repair Work Uncovers Mold Problem that Temporarily Closes California School

South Pasadena, CA – WEBWIRE

Earlier this month, KCRA published a story about the discovery of mold at an elementary school in Lincoln, California.  According to the report, the problem was discovered when workers repairing drips from the school’s air conditioning system came across mold growth.  As a safety precaution, the school was then closed for several days to prevent exposing children and faculty to any airborne mold.

Although mold is a natural part of the environment and can be found all around us, having it grow indoors and exposing building occupants to high levels in the air they breathe can lead to serious health concerns. Molds produce allergens, irritants and, in some cases, toxic substances known as mycotoxins.  It is also a known asthma trigger for those who suffer from the condition. Breathing in mold may also cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a disease that resembles bacterial pneumonia. In addition, exposure to certain types of mold, such as Aspergillus, may result in opportunistic infections in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system.

“Fortunately, the mold problem in this instance was found so that it could be addressed,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “This story brings to light the fact that mold often grows in places that are out of sight, such as in wall and ceiling cavities, behind cabinets, and in crawl spaces or basements.  Mold spores and fragments are easily aerosolized and in most circumstances can make their way to areas where people can be exposed.  In these circumstances, air testing can typically identify mold in the air even when it is not visible, but could be causing concerns for people in the area.”

LA Testing offers mold and other indoor air quality testing services along with all of the testing supplies needed.  The company has also sponsored a video about breathing mold and potential health concerns that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/61eTg1WfJHo.
