Last month, WCCO in Minneapolis published a report about an infectious disease outbreak of high school students at a school district in western Wisconsin.  According to the article, one student has already been confirmed with a Campylobacter infection and others have been hospitalized.

Campylobacter is a type of bacteria that causes an infectious disease known as campylobacteriosis. It is one of the most common causes of diarrheal illness in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Most people who become ill with campylobacteriosis get diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever within two to five days after exposure to the organism. The diarrhea may be bloody and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The illness typically lasts about one week. Some infected persons do not have any symptoms. In persons with compromised immune systems, Campylobacter occasionally spreads to the bloodstream and causes a serious life-threatening infection.”

Most human cases of campylobacteriosis are caused by one species, Campylobacter jejuni, but human illness can also be caused by other species.  Outbreaks of Campylobacter have most often been associated with unpasteurized dairy products, contaminated water, poultry and produce. Animals can also be infected, and some people get infected from contact with the stool of an ill dog or cat. The organism is not usually spread from one person to another, but this can happen if a person comes in contact with an infected person’s waste.

“The CDC estimates that campylobacteriosis affects over 1.3 million people every year,” said Joy Dell’Aringa, M.S., RM (NRM), CFSP, National Food Director at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “This is a tremendous number of people.  At EMSL, we offer testing services for Campylobacter and other microbial pathogens to help identify these organisms to prevent foodborne illnesses and the spread of disease through contaminated surfaces.  These services are available to the public, health officials and industry.”
