Getting kids involved in the planning of their lunches for the school week can help to alleviate stress for parents, reduce food wastage and also encourage kids to eat to sustain their energy through the day

ELLENBROOK, Perth, Western Australia (October 10, 2014) –

Mother of two, and founder of Flip Lid Lunchboxes, Samantha Judd said children themselves are the key to packing a good lunch.

“It’s time we handed some of the responsibility for lunchboxes to our children”, said Ms Judd.

“That may sound like a recipe for disaster, but it is actually the ideal way of ensuring kids learn about healthy food choices”, she said.

Ms Judd went on to say, "If they’re involved, they take greater responsibility, rather than feeling like they’ve been told what to eat - which usually ends up with half eaten lunches coming home”

“I realised that the best way to change this pattern was to involve my kids in the whole process. By giving them the power to decide what they wanted to pack into their lunchboxes, following a few healthy guidelines, they actually ate what they packed and we saved money on groceries” she said.

Ms Judd said parents should follow a few simple guidelines to get over the dreaded school lunchbox issue:

  • Sort out your pantry
  • Set aside pantry space for each child
  • Jointly create a lunch menu for the week
  • Write a specific shopping list
  • Get the kids to help with shopping and packing groceries away
  • Kids pack their own lunchboxes

"I’ve gone one step further and designed my own lunchbox with 6 compartments that helps guide kids into packing balanced lunches. It’s now easy to include food from all 5 important food groups and also means that lunch doesn’t have to be squashed in or something left out because there’s no more room”. she said.

Samantha Judd is a single mother of two and the designer/creator behind Flip Lid Lunchboxes. Designed from a “mum’s” perspective and with her own kids in mind, Ms Judd wants to encourage children to take an active role preparing their own healthy morning teas and lunches for school.
