A Dozen Wildfires Rage Across California Causing Widespread Property Damage

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Currently, thousands of firefighters are deployed across California to battle a dozen raging wildfires. The wildfires have resulted in widespread evacuations and have caused damage or the complete destruction of hundreds of homes and businesses. Chronic dry conditions continue to hinder efforts to stop the wildfires and many of these fires are burning aggressively due to gusty winds and record temperatures.

Although many properties have been completely destroyed, many others have escaped the flames.  Unfortunately, the enormous amount of smoke generated by the wildfires has caused smoke damage to many of the properties that have been saved, including some that are miles from the flames.

Wildfire smoke is filled with combustion by-products that include soot, ash and char that can travel long distances in the prevailing winds. Odors, discoloration and “ghosting” effects can result when these combustion by-products make it into buildings and onto surfaces and belongings.

“Smoke can have damaging effects to not only properties that survive the flames, but also to human health for anyone who lives or works in a smoke damaged property,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “Property owners who have homes or businesses that have suffered smoke damage often have to provide evidence of smoke residues to get support from their property insurance providers.  LA Testing’s network of laboratories provides smoke damage and soot testing services that are available to property owners, environmental experts and insurance providers.  Surface and air testing services can be instrumental in identifying damage and remediating a property back to pre-fire conditions.”

LA Testing recently produced an online video about smoke damage that can be seen at:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=Owo8lIoVTuk.
