Deputy Files Lawsuit due to Mold Problems in Orleans Parish Prison

Baton Rouge, LA – WEBWIRE

Recently, WDSU News reported that a sheriff’s deputy has filed a lawsuit against the Orleans Parish sheriff claiming deputies and inmates were exposed to mold.  According to the article, the deputy’s attorney has stated that their client has been working in the Orleans Parish Prison and Criminal District Courthouse where contractors have been remediating the buildings for mold.

The report goes on to share that remediation workers wore protective gear, but that no warnings or protective gear was provided for the deputies.  The deputy who filed the lawsuit claims to have been diagnosed with Type 1 Allergic Hypersensitivity that was made worse by exposure to mold.

For most indoor environments, mold only needs moisture and a food source to begin to grow.  Many common building materials, furnishing and people’s belongings can readily act as a food source when moisture is present. Even a small plumbing leak or a minor flooding event can be enough to allow mold to begin to grow in as short as 24 to 48 hours.

Elevated levels of airborne spores and mold fragments can cause allergies, trigger asthma attacks in sensitive individuals and even lead to infections in some people.  Even low levels of mold can cause health issues for people who are particularly sensitive to its presence.

“Buildings with structural issues that allow moisture to enter on a regular basis or do not adequately keep humidity levels low, can experience mold issues that will often escalate and get worse,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Weather conditions in Louisiana are often conducive to mold growth because of high humidity levels and heavy rains which are common.”

EMSL offers analytical services to identify all types of indoor contaminants, including mold, bacteria, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other allergens and potential asthma triggers.  They also provide the tools and testing supplies needed to perform air sampling.  In addition, EMSL recently sponsored an online video about what mold needs to grow indoors that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr6_zVT-SP0.

EMSL’s network of laboratories across North America includes a facility in Baton Rouge that can be reached at (225) 755-1920. To learn more about mold testing, equipment, supplies and training, please visit www.EMSL.com, call (800) 220-3675 or email info@EMSL.com .
