Altran presents "eMOC", the modular, smart car of the future

WEBWIRE

Altran Spain, a company of the Altran group, has completed the development of eMOC (Electric Modular Car), a modular, smart car designed to meet the new expectations of users in terms of mobility, connectivity and sustainability.

The eMOC is a modular, urban electric vehicle (EV) concept car which can be adapted to meet users’ needs at any given time via external-module integration or removal. The basic 2-passenger vehicle is designed to meet essential urban mobility needs. In accordance with strict mechanical, electrical and electronic rules, it will now be possible to combine different modules to increase the number of passengers, charge capacity and energy autonomy. As such, the eMOC will make it possible to optimise the characteristics of the vehicle while maintaining its energy capacity and kilometre autonomy, as well as preserving clean energy consumption.

The EV is equipped with a central intelligent device (smart vehicle) that is modelled on the same system used in tablets and smartphones. This device enables the vehicle to connect to the outside world (other vehicles, urban networks, pedestrians, etc.) and, as such, will enhance the driving experience, optimise security and improve access to new services.

Yoann Groleau, Director of the Automotive, Infrastructure and Transportation (AIT) division of Altran Spain, specified that the eMOC project came about as part of the development process triggered by the market launch of the electric vehicle, in so far as “vehicle electrification cannot be summarised as a mere change in motorisation trends”. Mr Groleau went on to say, “Indeed, this has called for a complete rethinking of the concepts of the vehicle itself and, in turn, of mobility in general. As such, the practise of single drivers using 1,200 kg vehicles with an autonomy of 1,000 km to make urban trips of less than 20 km is becoming obsolete.” Energy efficiency, connectivity with the environment and synergies with future Smart Grids are key elements in the future of the sector.

eMOC was developed by the Altran Excellence Centre for New Automotive Technologies based in Barcelona. This centre is a reference in the field of electric-vehicle development and the hub for all the global, EV-innovation and development projects of the Altran group. The centre offers the Group’s automotive clients (Renault, Nissan, PSA, BMW, Seat, Volkswagen and Porsche, etc.) a unique expertise in terms of electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as CO˛ emission-reduction systems.

Altran has more than 30 years experience providing services to key players in the automotive industry. The Group’s Automotive, Infrastructure and Transportation (AIT) division comprises more than 3,500 mechanical and electronics engineers, of which 250 are based in Spain.

Altran has also participated in the development of international projects such as the Quimera where the objective was to develop the most powerful electric car in the world; the AEGT (All Electric GT). Developed entirely in Spain, this racing car, with three electric motors and a 700 HP, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds and run at a maximum speed of 300 km/hr on a battery charge of 30 minutes.

Last March, still within the sphere of its automotive expertise, Altran renewed its technological partnership with the Lotus F1 team for the 2014 season. This partnership was formed in 2013 after a previous, 10-year collaboration between 2002 and 2010 during which Altran provided the Formula 1 with engineering and design consulting services.
