The latest article from Fox News’ Dr. Jennifer Landa MD cites a number of influential studies to support her hypothesis including articles from the Journal of Applied Physiology [2011], the European Heart Journal [2011] and the American College of Cardiology [2010].

The number of scary articles are definitely increasing and according to Jim Kirwan, the creator of Get America Moving, it is a real shame as these articles are often confusing and misleading to the average American. While I fundamentally disagree with her implied concerns about cardio or aerobic exercise, I do agree that both strength exercises and higher intensity exercise should be part of a well balanced and progressive exercise program. High intensity interval training [HIIT] can be very beneficial but you need to introduce it slowly and gradually taking your age, weight and current fitness level into account.
