Varithena (polidocanol injectable foam) is a prescription medicine used to treat varicose veins caused by problems with the great saphenous veins. It has been used widely in Europe for years, and is now FDA-approved for use in the U.S.
Like other vein treatments, Varithena improves a patient’s symptoms related to or caused by varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Such symptoms include leg heaviness and fatigue, restless legs and cramping, swelling, skin changes including discoloration, itchiness and ulcers. Currently, Hamilton Vein Center offers treatments for vein disease including radiofrequency ablation, phlebectomy, and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. Varithena will add another treatment option for patients suffering from vein disease and does not require any incisions, which makes it a desirable treatment option for some patients. Varithena is also a quick treatment that takes less than an hour and requires no local anesthesia. Varithena is similar to foam sclerotherapy and is administered through a catheter or by direct injection into the malfunctioning vein. Once treated, the diseased vein collapses and blood flow shifts to healthy veins relieving pressure and symptoms caused by the damaged veins.
