Second Harvest Heartland Encourages App Users to foodtweeks™ for Healthy Eating, While Increasing Donations

Unique, Free Mobile App Helps Minnesota Food Bank Through Donations

Stamford, CT – WEBWIRE

"Second Harvest Heartland is delighted to work with foodtweeks™ to enable consumers to support our work to end hunger in our community in a fun and effortless way, while also learning ways to consume fewer calories on a daily basis,” said Heather Olson, Corporate Engagement Manager, Second Harvest Heartland. “Working with foodtweeks™ allows us to provide meals to our nearly 1,000 agency partner programs that in turn distribute to hungry neighbors in our communities.”

foodtweeks™, a free app that combines weight management with feeding the hungry, has added Second Harvest Heartland in St. Paul, MN to the growing nationwide network of foodtweeks™-affiliated food banks.

foodtweeks™ uses the community of app users to make a difference in the lives of the hungry. When foodtweeks users report “tweeking” ;(trimming calories from their food), Second Harvest Heartland will receive donations that enable the food bank to distribute an equal number of nutritious calories to hungry families.

To continue community engagement on a social media level and raise awareness on hunger in America, a user can simply post a “tweek“ on Facebook or Twitter, which doubles or triples each donation. This alerts the friends and family to the active engagement of the user, encouraging them to learn more, and begin using the app themselves.

The goal of foodtweeks™ is to make it possible for weight-conscious consumers to be “heroes” who serve their communities by feeding the hungry. Trimming calories from their favorite foods in an easy, enjoyable way makes it easy to continue using the app, with the added incentive of helping themselves and families in their community.

”Second Harvest Heartland is delighted to work with foodtweeks™ to enable consumers to support our work to end hunger in our community in a fun and effortless way, while also learning ways to consume fewer calories on a daily basis,” said Heather Olson, Corporate Engagement Manager, Second Harvest Heartland. “Working with foodtweeks™ allows us to provide meals to our nearly 1,000 agency partner programs that in turn distribute to hungry neighbors in our communities.”

The innovative app is working to promote healthier communities while showing the need for hunger relief. foodtweeks™ offers a unique approach to weight management. Users simply tell the app what food they are thinking of buying, eating or preparing. The app instantly displays images of suggested “tweeks” that remove enough calories to make a positive difference – but not in a way that changes the taste or leaves users hungry.

One of the best parts is that foodtweeks™ maintains a crowdsourced picture database of more than 44,000 small changes that show users how to “tweek” everything from a particular brand of cheeseburger at a national restaurant chain to grocery store purchases, and homemade dishes of every kind. Users can add their own tweeks if they know a tip that is not included.

“foodtweeks™ is proud and excited to support Second Harvest Heartland,” said Elisa Shannon, foodtweeks™ Executive Vice President of Partnership Development. “Second Harvest Heartland is a highly committed and respected organization that provides outstanding service to food-insecure members of our community through the distribution of food through over 1,000 agency partners.”

foodtweeks™ is rapidly expanding its partner-base to food banks all across the nation, with more joining each week, according to Ms. Shannon, herself a former food bank executive. Food banks that wish to affiliate with foodtweeks™ may contact Ms. Shannon by email at  elisa@foodtweeks.com .

Jay Walker, the inventor of foodtweeks™, is also the chairman of Patent Properties and curator of TEDMED, the health and medicine edition of the famous TED conference. A noted entrepreneur, Mr. Walker has founded three companies that serve more than 50 million customers. He is best known as the creator of Priceline, which brought a new level of value to the travel industry.
