A study conducted last year found that 12-year-old children are most at risk of being killed or seriously injured in a pedestrian road accident.

The study looked at the annual number of road accidents per 10,000 of the population in Britain, broken down into age groups, and the results showed that there is a dramatic spike in road casualties amongst 12-year-olds.

Critics have blamed this in a lack of road safety awareness programmes currently running in primary schools.

Commissioned by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), the Stepping Out report was delivered to Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin in May 2013, and also highlights a “postcode lottery” when it comes to pedestrian accidents involving children.

Darwen in Blackburn, Lancashire was found to be the most dangerous area, with a 50 per cent higher risk of child pedestrian casualties compared to the national average. This compares to the lowest average of 11 per cent, in Westminster, London.

Meanwhile, when it comes to all ages of pedestrians, the London borough of Newham is the most dangerous, with pedestrians at double the risk of being involved in a road accident compared to the national average.
